WHY WE LOVE THESE WINES
Do you remember how we found out about Soren Wines? An unexpected and delightful discovery while working on a different project....
We met up with Katie in September at her day job with Kitsch wines and got to chatting about 1 Mill Road. This winery has been on our radar for a while, and we've been following each vintage release since the winery's first. We were THRILLED to learn that Katie and Ben might have a few bottles available for OWC members!
We love the passion and elbow grease that go into the 1 Mill Road wines as well as the small scale of the winery. Producing < 1000 cases a year doesn't work for everyone, so this is a bit of an Okanagan unicorn.
It goes without saying that the wines bearing the 1 Mill Road label are beautiful, aromatic and complex. Cellar worthy gems.
ABOUT KATIE & BEN
Ben and Katie met in 2019, discovering not only a shared love for wine but also a common dream of owning and growing their own wine business.
Ben hails from Australia where, prior to moving to the Okanagan in 2018, he was Chief Winemaker for Wyndham Estate as well as Stoneleigh (NZ) and Campo Viejo in Spain. After a couple of years as chief winemaker with Mission Hill in Kelowna, Ben wanted to prioritize the dream of running his own winery.
Katie, originally from the Okanagan Valley, spent a decade in South Africa working in hospitality and marketing. She publishing many wine related articles and achieving her Diploma from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust. She moved back to the Okanagan and began working with Kitsch Winery before starting her adventure with 1 Mill Road.
Combined, they have 5 children and ultimately they want to create something that will involve their kids every year. They are building a legacy project - something to be proud of.
ABOUT 1 MILL ROAD
The story of 1 Mill Road begins with an old pear orchard transformed exclusively to Pinot Noir in 2012 on the Naramata Bench. This story starts with David and Cynthia Enns, the visionary founders of Laughing Stock Winery. Located at the address: 1 Mill Road, this vineyard stands as a testament to their commitment to quality winemaking and love for Pinot Noir.
Katie and Ben's dream of crafting exceptional BC wines found its realization when they picked up the torch from the Enns'. They all shared a similar vision and a strong work ethic. Now, you'll find Ben and Katie in the vineyard with their 5 kids, tirelessly working in the rows ... or tending the ferments at the Vault.
The magic happens at the Naramata Wine Vault in the charming village of Naramata, where 1 Mill Road wines come to life. Specializing in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, these wines are crafted from carefully selected vineyards on the Naramata Bench and the newly designated sub-appellation of the East Kelowna Slopes. Each bottle reflects their hard work and passion for wine.

This Chardonnay originates from the newly established East Kelowna Slopes sub-region in the Okanagan Valley, renowned for its suitability for growing top-notch Chardonnay grapes. The 2022 growing season, characterized by its cool weather and extended fall, provided optimal conditions for the development of Chardonnay's distinctive characteristics.
Following maturation in a combination of new French oak barriques and neutral oak puncheons, this wine presents a refined and soft palate. The aromatic profile features discernible notes of orange creamsicle and a subtle minerality. We'd recommended you allow the wine to aerate in the glass for a few minutes to fully appreciate the nuanced bouquet.
Upon tasting, expect a well-balanced array of flavors, including golden yellow apple, peaches, and cream with a soft finish.
The 1 Mill Road 2021 Block Two Pinot Noir
$46.10 inc tax and deposit
The 2021 vintage of Block Two is a meticulously crafted blend, combining the most premium Pinot Noir from the Home Block with grapes from a neighboring vineyard in Naramata. Situated on the quintessential Naramata Bench facing southwest, these vineyards maximize sunlight exposure and air circulation. The growing season of 2021, marked by higher temperatures, led to a lower yield but more concentrated fruit.
Given the stress on the fruit, the winemaking process deviated slightly, with a quicker fermentation than usual. The wine matured in 228L French Oak barrels, maintaining the separation of the two vineyards during fermentation until Katie and Ben decided on the blend, just before bottling.
The sensory experience begins with notes of cran-raspberry and wild mushroom on the nose, offering a hint of the wine's complexity. On the palate, the Block Two unfolds with the flavors of red cherry and subtle spice, culminating in a finish characterized by beautifully silky tannins. This vintage promises a unique and refined expression of Pinot Noir, showcasing the distinct terroir of the Naramata Bench.
